LASCO Helps Clients Spring into Stability

By Kate McGarvey, Executive Director

I woke this morning to an unexpected few inches of snow on the ground and a mess of commuters navigating the still-falling flakes. In a few days, though, it looks like it will be warm enough for shorts. That familiar unpredictability of Ohio’s seasons—false starts, sudden shifts, and constant adjustment—feels like something we all know well.

But for many of the families we serve, that day-to-day unpredictability isn’t just inconvenient—it’s destabilizing.

When incomes are tight, there isn’t a buffer for the unexpected. A missed paycheck, a medical bill, or a housing issue can quickly cascade into something much harder to recover from. What feels like fluctuation for some becomes crisis for others.

Just as we hope for a steadier transition into spring, our work centers on helping our clients find a sense of stability.

Our Community Economic Development teams strengthen the foundations of small businesses and nonprofits, and in turn, the communities they serve. As these organizations grow, hire, and expand their reach, they help build lasting conditions for stability that ripple far beyond any one client or case.

For survivors of domestic violence, stability begins with safety—and safety requires access to resources. Our staff work alongside clients to secure protection orders, navigate divorce and custody, access public benefits, and connect with housing and employment supports that make long-term safety possible.

Financial instability can take hold quickly and be incredibly difficult to unwind. Through our Economic Justice work, we help clients address debt through bankruptcy, defend against collection actions, and protect against scams and predatory lending—creating pathways back to secure financial footing.

In a season that reminds us how quickly things can change, our work is rooted in helping ensure that change doesn’t have to mean crisis. It’s about creating steadiness where there is uncertainty, and building foundations that allow individuals, families, and communities not just to weather what comes next—but to move forward with confidence.
