Government Shutdown and October Public Benefits Update
October 1, 2025 ┃By: LASCO's Public Benefits team
Shutdown worries? Here’s what’s happening with your October benefits.
- Social Security: Your Social Security and SSI checks should be paid as normal. However, it might be harder to reach someone at the Social Security office, and you might not be able to get a new Medicare card, among other things.
- Job and Family Services Offices: Will be open and conducting business as usual.
- SNAP/Food Stamps: Everyone should still get their October SNAP benefits.
- Medicaid/Medicare: These programs are still operating through at least the end of the year. It may be harder to get Medicare questions answered, but your Medicaid and Medicare cards will keep working.
- OWF/Cash Assistance: October benefits should be paid.
- VA Benefits: VA benefits should be paid in October as usual.
